>From what I am hearing there seems to be an opinion that the Caller ID
"must" reflect the location of the person calling. I do not agree with
that opinion. One of the benefits of a VoIP phone is the mobility of
the device. That's not any different from a cell phone or a toll free
phone number for that matter. A VoIP phone is a great way to promote
telecommuting in the workplace as workers can take a VoIP phone to any
location, connect to the internet and operate the same as from home.
That's not a deceptive practice put a very practical one. For example
we have one employee that works out of our office in Colorado, has a
home in Ohio and a vacation condo in Florida. He is able to work from
Colorado, Ohio or Florida and never leave his virtual office. I do
not consider this a deceptive practice just a practical benefit of the
VoIP phone.
I don't see any problem the way the law is written unless it assumes
that a 970 area code MUST be located in the 970 area and that would pose
a problem with cell phone too. I do however believe the Caller ID should
identify the correct person or entity just but that the location should
not be assumed.
Much of the discussion has related to operations outside the US which
the law itself only applies to a VoIP phone in the US. Deceptive uses
of VoIP phones outside the US is a different problem all together, I
do agree however that the law proposed resolves a much smaller problem
than the global problem.
