These products are a step in the right direction, but not mature enough for
mainstream adoption. Caution is advised for some vendors who still need to
raise the bar to match equivalent SIP device price/perfromance.
The IAXY is costly and primitively packaged (have received some shipped
without a PS). The casing has a toy store look and feel and significantly
fewer management features than comparable SIP adapters. I am unfamiliar
with the newer AG-168VE, which appears interesting, albeit feature light.

Availability and volume delivery is problematic here. After repeated
inquiries spanning several months, I was unable to actually obtain a
tangible product for test lab purposes. To be successful for wide-scale
deployments and product launches, the IAX-based CPE segment needs many more
vendors with the ability to respond and deliver. With 50 plus SIP
phones/TAs on the market and very few IAX phones/TAs to choose from,
realizing NAT-related benefits and other security advantages becomes
problematic.
